Original 1973 Rikhi Ram
Necklace design
Pancham Pancham style
I bought this
locally from the original owner who brought this
sitar to the US in 1973. He couldn't tune it and
gave up. So it was in its case for 40+ years until
he thought of selling it. I had no choice but to buy
it obviously. It is all original and comes with original
bridges and jawari. . I have put on a resin bridge set
(as shown in pictures), fully fitted here and resurfaced
and shaped frets with 15 hours of TLC done. Jawari
is set in a closed style which is usually preferred
for this design. Chikaris set in 'chunky' style, not
buzzy. Sounds very nice with a balanced sympathetic
response.
Cosmetically it
has the original finish with no flaking. Minor shop
rash of course and a few finish cracks on the gourd
and one on the back neck along a mineral streak in
the wood. All of this was there originally as it had
been polished over and never progressed. It is the
best one I've ever seen anywhere of this model of
this age. The bodywork appears to be before they
started outsourcing to Kolkata, possibly from Meerut
or other parts of Northern India. Has a single piece
tumba, not a reshaped Kolkata style.
Many sitars of
this style and era were smaller. The tabli measures
12 3/4 inches and the neck width is 3 3/8 inches.
Suitable for D tuning. Please note this style is 4
1/2 notes meend only. It's now well aged even though
unplayed and has a 1/4 thick seasoned tabli so
decent sustain. Original setup (and current) is
gandhar pancham with added laraj bass PA and 11
sympathetics. The arah slots will accommodate other
tunings and I'm happy to set up an additional bridge
for a fee or any other work
Comes setup with
our resin bridge set, includes original bone bridges
as shown in the pictures, original wooden case and
our standard accessories package which includes a
free DVD of your choice. A very nice vintage
instrument at a fair price. Please
email with any
questions.
