Half cut gourd with wood back, very nicely finished. A good choice for a more portable instrument or for smaller players as well as the gourd size still has a nice footprint for traditional sitting position. Synthetic bridges and langot and nicely made har wood pegs including sympathetics. Suman Karmakar continues to impress me with his attention to sound and detail. One of the only makers who generally does all work right in his shop from wood to final instrument. He's heavily influenced by the old parlor type dark "butter smooth" sound of Hiren Roy and his instruments reflect this as well as the design. A highly under-rated maker maintaining traditional style of fitting and never mass produced. Recommend for players who like a decent half open sound. Add an extra bridge with sitar purchase for $50, will be fitted and jawari complete and will keep a duplicate here for future needs. A great choice for those looking for the classic smooth Kolkata type of sound at a nice price.
